“My residents are angry and when they’re angry, I’m angry,” Cassetti said Thursday. “I’m going to be asking Eversource to rebate everyone who lost service $200.”

Cassetti said he and Corporation Counsel John P. Marini have contacted Eversource to arrange a meeting with company officials next week. The mayor said if his request is not met, he will consider legal action.

Derby Mayor Richard Dziekan said he’d like to join the meeting.

“This was a big inconvenience to people,” Dziekan said. “If we could get rebates for them, that would be great.”

As of the last update received from Eversource, Cassetti said there are 62 customers without natural gas service in Ansonia and another 43 in Derby. The outage affected about 1,500 Ansonia customers and another 1,000 in Derby.

The problem began late Tuesday morning. Bill Akley, who heads Eversource’s Gas Services division, said routine maintenance was being done in Derby. A broken valve in a line in Ansonia reduced gas flow into four zones that served the Hilltop areas in the two cities.

To replace the valve, service to 2,500 customers was shut off.

Eversource called in additional help from Massachusetts. Once service was restored, the technicians went back to the homes beginning Wednesday afternoon to turn on the service and check any gas appliances.

“Technicians are regularly going to the remaining locations, but unfortunately, those customers have not been home,” said Mitch Gross, an Eversource spokesperson, on Thursday. “Company representatives are also trying to contact these customers by phone and we’ve been leaving information at those remaining addresses to call our Contact Center and receive priority attention for having their gas service turned on and their appliances relit.”

Cassetti called the outage “a big inconvenience to people.”

“I had senior citizens spending Tuesday night under blankets. I had parents unable to take showers and missing a day of work so Eversource could have access to their meters and appliances. I had students miss a day of school Wednesday,” he said.

Anyone still experiencing issues was asked to call Eversource at 877-944-5325.
