DERBY — Gas service is expected to be restored by late Wednesday night to a majority of Eversource customers in the Valley still without heat and hot water after a low-pressure issue, officials said.

But many of the nearly 2,500 customers affected on Derby and Ansonia’s Hilltop area spent the night watching election results in their living rooms wearing extra sweaters, a jacket or slept under a houseful of blankets.

More than 60 percent of the utility company’s natural gas customers have been without heat and hot water since Tuesday morning.

Ansonia Superintendent of Schools Joseph DiBacco on Tuesday canceled all classes in his four schools, three of which are located on the Hilltop. He said the heat and hot water has been shut off at Mead and Prendergast elementary schools and Ansonia High School.

Derby Superintendent of Schools Matthew Conway said Bradley School will be closed Thursday because of a lack of hot water.

Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti said Tuesday night that there were 1,780 impacted houses in his city and 430 in Derby.

“We made excellent progress last night on repairs to the system and started the relighting process for some customers at around 8 a.m. this morning,” Eversource said Wednesday in a statement. “We have started sending technicians back to the affected homes and businesses to turn their natural gas service back on. For the safety of our customers, employees have been screened for COVID-19 and will be wearing masks and gloves.”

The company’s goal is to have gas service restored to the majority of affected customers by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Cassetti said in a statement Wednesday morning that “Eversource crews accompanied by Ansonia Emergency Services Personnel worked through the night to shut off meters at affected homes and continue to work at this time. Our police, fire and ARMS Departments continue to have increased staff standing by and responding to calls for service throughout the event.”

“Eversource has again expressed that their goal is full restoration by midnight tonight,” Cassetti said. “If Eversource crews are unable to restore every service by that time, Eversource will restart work early Thursday morning.”

Cassetti said affected residents should contact Eversource directly at 877-944-5325 if they need assistance or have any questions.

“Our community is strong and we will get through this together. As always, you can reach me at City Hall by calling 203-736-5900. Press 1 or email dcassetti@ansoniact.org.”
