BRIDGEPORT — Construction crews working on Johnson Street struck a high-press gas line Thursday morning, sending first responders and gas company personnel to the scene, city officials said.

Shortly before 9 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of Johnson Street on a report of a crew working in the area that possibly hit a gas line, the fire department said.

Arriving fire crews reported a smell of natural gas in the air and asked the dispatcher to have Southern Connecticut Gas personnel respond.

Scott Appleby, the city’s director of emergency communications and emergency management, said units on scene confirmed that a high-press line was struck.

There was no immediate word on how long repairs could take.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
