Capacity trading is ramping up ahead of the winter, with the number of trades on the top 10 U.S. natural gas pipelines almost doubling, according to a recent analysis by Capacity Center.
The analysis found that overall volumes nearly tripled in October compared to September, but the jump in monthly deals was “relatively small” compared to spot and longer-term deals given weather uncertainty, according to Capacity Center, a unit of Skipping Stone.
The awarded capacity in annualized equivalent totaled 12.7 Bcf/d, a 258% jump from September.
The largest number of deals were transacted on the Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line, aka Transco, which recorded a total of 1,1518 deals. The transactions included 892 for one month to 11 months, as well as 611 spot deals and 15 deals for one year or more.
Texas Eastern Transmission was second with a total of 1,255 transactions, and Columbia Gas Transmission came in third with 1,136 deals, Capacity Center said. Tennessee Gas Pipeline reported the largest number of deals for one year or more, with 67 in October.
There were a total of 6,245 capacity releases for the Top 10 gas pipelines in the United States, 96% higher than September. Spot capacity releases rose 561% month/month to 2,671, while monthly capacity releases climbed 25% to 3,448. Capacity releases of one year or longer jumped 641% to 126 from September to October.
The Capacity Center database stores trades since 1994 and tracks receipt and delivery points on pipelines. It also records shipper entity and status. In addition to information services related to pipeline critical notices and open seasons, all capacity trading activity is tracked on all U.S. pipelines. It also tracks the price at which capacity has traded historically during cold weather periods or other constraint periods. In addition, it tracks the basis differential to a market zone compared to capacity values, and it provides analysis of how well traders perform compared to other trading companies.
