Several emergency vehicles responded to a gas leak off Fountain Ridge Road Tuesday afternoon. A second gas leak has now been reported elsewhere in town.
Emergency broadcasts between various fire and EMS departments in Orange County said fire crews and Dominion Energy crews were on-scene at Fountain Ridge Road investigating a report of a leak. Communication between emergency crews later described detecting the leak through a storm drain at the corner of Charlesberry Lane and Fountain Ridge Road.
According to the broadcast communication, occupants of some houses along both streets were being evacuated shortly before 1 p.m. Responders said gusts of high wind caused the gas to be clearly smelled.
About an hour later, according to the Chapel Hill Fire Department, responders successfully shut the leak off. Motorists in the neighborhood should be prepared for a lane closure as Dominion Energy is working to make repairs.
UPDATE: The gas leak has been shut off. We are clearing the scene. Dominion Energy will have the road reduced to one lane while they make the repair.

A spokesperson for Dominion Energy said the leak was caused by a third-party working in the area around Fountain Ridge Road.
Shortly after, the Chapel Hill Fire Department reported responding to a separate gas leak on Hillsborough Street in Chapel Hill. Dominion Energy is also on-scene working to repair the leak, with a company spokesperson saying crews are working to stop the flow of gas “as quickly and safely as possible.” Motorists are urged to avoid the area and more updates on the incident are expected to follow.
