4:44 AM UPDATE: Peoria Police confirm that Knoxville Avenue is reopened to normal flow of traffic after the overnight gas leak.

1:05 AM UPDATE: The Peoria Fire Department, Peoria Public Works, and Peoria Police Department continue to work on a major natural gas leak in Peoria.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Stephen Rada says in a statement that they were called to the 2200 block of North Knoxville around 11 PM Wednesday night, on a report of a gas leak.
When they got there, they found a outside gas meter shared off next to a residential home.
Crews were not able to shut the gas off to the meter, and had to evacuate the home as it was filling up with natural gas, causing a potential for a house explosion.
One person was found outside in distress, and told firefighters one person was still inside another unit.
Firefighters were able to get her out safely.
A two block radius was evacuated due to the gas leak, and dangerous levels of gas inside and outside the residential home.
Ameren is also on scene, digging up a section of Knoxville Avenue, between Thrush and Arcadia to try and shut down the gas.
Crews will remain on scene until the gas can be shut off, and brought down to a safe level.
One person was taken to the hospital with what appears to be non-life-threatening issues.

PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) – Police and fire crews shut down a portion of Knoxville Avenue late Wednesday night because of a large gas leak.
A police dispatcher said the gas leak was confined to an apartment building, which was evacuated.
Peoria Police and firefighters closed down the 2200 and 2300 blocks of Knoxville, between Thrush and Arcadia Avenues.
Authorities asked the public to stay away from the area.
