Vermilion Gains Certified Label for Some Canadian Natural Gas Supply - Natural Gas Intelligence

Calgary-based Vermilion Energy Inc. has become the third Canadian producer to earn an international eco-label for its natural gas.

The independent also announced Wednesday an initial sale of certified gas sporting the ethical energy brand, created by New York City-based Equitable Origin, which is trademarked as EO100 Standard Certification.

“As the energy transition progresses, we believe it is essential to demonstrate verified excellence in the environmental and social conditions under which energy has been produced, including natural gas,” President Curtis Hicks said.

Earning the EO100TM certified gas brand requires satisfying performance benchmarks for public disclosure, labor standards, finance, field practices, environment safeguards, as well as relations with communities and Indigenous tribes.

Many North American gas operators are working to certify their supplies as having low-carbon emissions. Designating natural gas as certified, “differentiated” or “responsibly sourced” may do little to reduce carbon intensity, but as U.S. and overseas customers question how their fuel is produced, the branding is growing in importance to ensure conformity and transparency.

Other Canada gas producers also are working to differentiate their gas supplies by gaining a certification label.

Calgary’s Seven Generations Energy Ltd., taken over by Arc Resources Ltd. in February, each has some gas supplies certified.

Pacific Canbriam Energy Ltd., a supplier for the Woodfibre liquefied natural gas export project in British Columbia and for Canadian markets, also carries the brand.

Like Pacific Canbriam, Vermilion made its first EO100 gas sale through broker Macquarie Energy Canada Ltd. on the Xpansiv Digital Fuels Registry, a computer trading service that Xpansiv CBL Holding Group developed.

Beyond certifying gas supply, efforts also are underway to verify standards to reduce facility methane leaks. A coalition of leading U.S. natural gas operators, including Devon Energy Corp., EQT Corp., Sempra, Southern Company and Williams, last month launched an initiative to accelerate and verify those standards.
