A home in South Bradenton has exploded, according to officials.

Cedar Hammocks Fire Control District says two residents were hurt and taken to Blake Hospital.

Nearby residents were evacuated or told to shelter in place. A firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Manatee Hospital.

In a news release, fire and TECO crews responded at 11:30 a.m. to a report of a natural gas leak in the 2900 block of 9th Street West. According to officials, while they were setting up a perimeter and searching for the leak, an explosion was heard at 2:03 p.m.

"I was in front of the house, all you hear is boom, a loud boom. I look over I see the flames up in the air," Nathaniel Bevin said. He witnessed the blast.

The explosion happened at a home located at 804 29th Avenue West. According to the release, the resulting fire was put out, and the leak was located and stopped. Officials believe there was a build-up of gas in the sewer lines.

A family member of one of the people who was hurt said her loved ones were told to stay in their home.

"They asked them if it was dangerous, and if they need to be evacuated. And they told him 'no, it’s fine it’s nothing. it’ll go away,'" Katrina Lopez said. "They just decided to go outside just so they weren’t breathing the air, but I guess that quick moment when my brother and father went back inside the house was when the explosion happened."

Florida Power & Light responded and shut down power to the area, officials say, to "mitigate potential ignition sources."

The release states that the Red Cross has been notified and will assist those affected.
