Fire department checks jail for gas leak - Santa Cruz Sentinel

SANTA CRUZ  — Staff at the Santa Cruz County Jail called the Santa Cruz Fire Department to check on a report of a gas leak early Friday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Keehn reported. The call was triggered and later cleared after an employee felt lightheaded when entering the South Housing Unit of the jail.

The fire department responded and made sure that there was nothing in the air and that nothing was leaking, Keehn said. Everything came back negative. No inmates reported feeling ill.

“It was all handled very quickly,” Keehn said.

The South Housing Unit, according to a Grand Jury report on the county’s website, houses a pre-classification unit. On the Sheriff’s Office’s COVID-19 response page, the agency highlights the establishment of a preliminary observation unit for those newly booked into the jail. The South Housing Unit is currently holding at least two COVID-19-positive inmates.

Keehn did not have information on exactly when or who tested positive other than that the most recent test results came back Dec. 15. Both of the inmates were previously infected with the virus when they were booked, she said.

“This is the entire reason we have those initial tests,” Keehn said. “We have that quarantine unit and have everyone quarantined for 14 days so they don’t just come in and spread it to other people who are already there. Protocols are in place and they are working.”

Every inmate goes into the preliminary observation unit for 14 days before entering the main housing units of the jail; these inmates tested positive “fairly recently” and will ride out their cases in the observation unit before joining general population.

“We just went through our third testing of inmates who are housed in the jail and there are still no positive tests within those inmates,” Keehn said.

As for jail staff, Keehn said she didn’t think there were any recent cases. Correctional officers made news just after Thanksgiving when nine staff members had tested positive, constituting an outbreak. The origin of the outbreak, believed to be a party, is under investigation.
