BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -- PSE&G workers and firefighters from Berkeley Heights and other towns are at the site of an apparent natural gas leak at Glenside and Roland roads in the township.
PSE&G's street crew has arrived in the area and high natural gas readings were found in the storm sewer, while low readings were found in the sanitary sewer, reported Berkeley Heights Battalion Chief Jim Hopkins. He had previously said the area has been secured and nearby homes had been metered for natural gas, "all had negative readings."
The news of the gas leak was first reported by Breaking News Network (BNN) at 1:15 p.m. Residents reported a heavy odor of gas and firefighters responded. Readings indicated there was natural gas in the area and crews reported “they believe it to be coming from the street,” according to BNN.
By 1:23 p.m. New Providence was sending an engine to the area of Glenside Road and Beattie Way. Other departments were also asked to help close off the road and establish a perimeter “due to multiple sources of gas coming from the ground,” according to BNN.
By 1:28 p.m. the incident commander requested additional fire personnel to be on standby at headquarters. An engine from Stirling was asked to cover the area from Berkeley Heights headquarters and the Chatham ladder engine to standby at its River Road firehouse.
