Florida gas prices down slightly after two-month high - Tampa Bay Times

kodikod.blogspot.com

After hitting a two-month high last week, Florida gas prices dropped slightly.

Florida gas prices averaged $2.13 per gallon, down 2 cents from last Monday and 3 cents from their eight-week high, according to AAA, the Auto Club Group. Tampa Bay prices hovered just below the state average at $2.12 per gallon, down 3 cents from the previous week.

Both were double-digit increases from this time last month — up 20 cents per gallon on average in Tampa Bay and 13 cents higher on average across the state.

Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesman, said that while the past week was “relatively uneventful” for the fuel market, news of vaccines being approved and distributed may affect future prices.

“The (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)’s approval of Pfizer’s (COVID-19) vaccine could help promote higher oil prices due to its potential of helping fuel demand eventually rebound in 2021,” he said. “However, the optimism would have to overpower current conditions.”

Jenkins noted that the rising coronavirus infections is causing some cities and states to implement new lockdowns, which could hamper demand for fuel.

Florida reported 8,958 coronavirus infections Sunday, as well as 84 deaths. The state’s total reported coronavirus infections was 1,125,931, while its death toll was 20,133.

The state’s lowest average gas prices for its metro areas were in Punta Gorda ($2.01 per gallon), Tallahassee ($2.08 per gallon) and Jacksonville ($2.08 per gallon).

Its highest average gas prices were in West Palm Beach ($2.26 per gallon), Vero Beach ($2.17 per gallon), and Ocala ($2.17 per gallon).

Tampa Bay, which usually has some of the state’s least expensive gas price averages, ranked near the middle of Florida’s metro areas.

Nationally, gas was $2.16 per gallon, flat from a week ago and up 3 cents from the same time last month.
