Firefighters and police are on the scene of a gas leak off Lake Conroe that is being described as “major,” with a road closure on Texas 105 expected to last eight hours on Thursday.
A Conroe Police Department post on Twitter stated the “major gas leak” was near the intersection of Texas 105 West and South Pine Lake Road in Conroe.
An unmarked 6-to-8-inch high-pressure gas line was ruptured by a private company boring underground, according to Conroe Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jeff Smith. Centerpoint Energy is working the scene and told Conroe PD that 105 West will be shut down on both directions from Villas to Old River Road for at least eight hours, Smith added.
“The area is contained, so at this point there’s no need for evacuation,” Smith told The Courier that Centerpoint officials had said, adding the distribution company is working to avoid cutting the gas line for residents.
Conroe PD on Twitter stated barricades on 105 West would be placed at the corner of April Plaza Marina & Boat Rentals. The Villas subdivision’s residents will be able to access their homes, according to the post.
An alternate route for westbound traffic will be at McCaleb Road, while one for eastbound motorists will be available at FM 2854, Conroe PD’s Twitter stated.
On site evaluating the situation were Conroe PD and Conroe Fire, read an initial Twitter post, advising alternate routes be taken as two eastbound lanes were blocked.
This is a developing story.
