FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- Gas prices across the country and right here in Indiana continues to climb, leaving many people concerned.
According to Gas Buddy's daily survey of 201 stations in Fort Wayne, gas prices have risen 17 cents per gallon in the past week. Right now, the average for a gallon of gas is $2.64.
Gas prices in Fort Wayne are 33 cents higher than a month ago. The national average price of gasoline has also increased 10 cents per gallon in the last week.
Experts say last week's extreme cold shut down millions of barrels per day in refinery capacity. That has caused gas prices to rise a lot recently.
ABC21 talked with people in the community to see how they're feeling with the higher gas prices. They say they're worried and will have to adjust.
"I just moved, I have a kid, it makes things hard on me," Community member John Barkley said. "I have to put 40, 50, 60 bucks of gas in my car a week, I'm pretty concerned over it."
Another Fort Wayne resident had similar thoughts.
"The more you have to spend for gas, the less money you have to spend for other things," Bob Christian said. "You got to cut back on everything."
Amanda Delacruz is another resident who's unsettled by the steady climb of gas prices.
"I'm definitely going to travel less, try to car pool, things like that so I don't have to waste a lot of money on gas," she said.
Experts say once refineries get back online, gas prices could decrease. But, as refineries begin to transition to summer gasoline, it could rise again.
On February 22 last year, gas was 33 cents cheaper at $2.31 a gallon.
