YAKIMA, Wash. — A Washington police officer’s act of kindness helped a woman who was running out of gas.
Dairan Jack had lost her wallet, was running late for work and was running out of gas when she was pulled over by a Yakima police officer Monday, KVEW reported.
Officer Austen Cagle, seeing Jack’s problem, filled her tank with gasoline so she could get home, the television station reported.
“That night, he made sure that a woman he didn’t even know -- a complete stranger -- made it home,” Jack wrote in a Facebook post.
The day was not going well for Jack, who works as a nighttime security officer at Kittitas Valley Healthcare in Ellensburg, KVEW reported.
She lost her wallet at a local Walmart, and it had not been turned in, the television station reported. Realizing she needed to get ready for work, Jack went home and changed into her security uniform.
Jack got halfway through her 45-minute drive to work when she saw she did not have enough work to make it to work and back, KVEW reported.
“I was like, ‘Oh, I’m not gonna make it,’” Jack told the television station.
Jack headed home and was a few blocks away from her residence when Kagle pulled her over for speeding.
“I pulled over Darian just for a couple (of) minor traffic infractions,” Cagle told KVEW.
Cagle asked to see her driver’s license, and Jack explained why she did not have it.
“I started crying; it was embarrassing because I was like, ‘I lost my wallet … I was trying to get to work,” Jack told KVEW. “I have no gas. I’m just trying to get home.’”
Cagle noticed in his computer system that Jack had reported her wallet stolen. So instead of issuing her a ticket, he decided to fill up her tank.
“We’re all human. We’ve all been in tough positions,” Cagle told the television station. “We’ve all been there.”
“I started crying more and I was like, ‘You don’t have to do that. That’s way too nice of you,’” Jack told KVEW.
Jack said Cagle left before she could ask his name, so he posted a photo of him filling her tank on Facebook and thanked him.
“I was hoping that somebody would identify him,” Jack told KVEW. “I really appreciated it and I wanted him to know I was thankful because not many people would do that.”
Yakima police Chief Matthew Murray commented on the Facebook photo and identified Cagle.
In an interesting twist, Jack has applied for a job on the Yakima Police Department and will be taking a test in late April.
“I wasn’t even thinking about becoming a police officer until I actually lost one of my twin sons last year,” Jack told KVEW. “Then I started working with the security company I’m with now.”
Jack’s story has a happy ending. Several days after she was helped by Cagle, Jack was contacted by a woman, who had found her walled, the television station reported. Jack met the woman at her workplace and sent her flowers to show her thanks.
“What are the chances of running into all these really nice people, you know?” Jack told KVEW.
