The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has fined Hawaii Gas $230,000 for violations of the Clean Air Act at a facility on the ʻEwa side of Oʻahu.

The EPA cited the company after a January 2020 inspection at its synthetic natural gas plant in Campbell Industrial Park.

The EPA determined the facility violated chemical release prevention and reporting requirements. It says Hawaii Gas failed to meet safety requirements and conduct hazards analyses, correct equipment deficiencies, and lacked required information in its emergency response plan.

In a statement, Hawaii Gas says it takes the safety of employees and the public seriously, and is committed to improving safety at its facilities. The company says it worked cooperatively with the EPA in the matter.

The EPA says Hawaii Gas has agreed to train maintenance employees, modify equipment, and complete other tasks to bring the facility into compliance.
