HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Several buildings in Kalihi remain evacuated, including Hawaii News Now, after a construction contractor broke a gas line along Waiakamilo Road on Monday morning.
The gas line was hit about 10:30 a.m. on Waiakamilo between Hart and Kalani streets.
Only one building, the one with Hawaii News Now and several state offices, was evacuated because of its proximity to the gas line.
Businesses on Hart Street were evacuated because they’re downwind.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Louise Kim McCoy said four units responded to the scene.
“Due to the reading at that time, the incident commander thought it was the best and most prudent thing to do to evacuate,” McCoy said.
As the situation dragged on into the afternoon, employees at various locations started to feel the effects of the closure.
Maka Agai, an employee who evacuated from NAPA, said the company wasn’t even able to do deliveries.
“We’re trying our best to please our customers but we can’t do anything we can’t get back into the shop,” she said.
By mid-afternoon, some businesses called it a day ― allowing workers back inside just long enough to get their belongings.
Hawaii News is preparing to broadcast its afternoon shows from a nearby warehouse in Kalihi.
Just before 2 p.m., Hawaii Gas said it could take about three more hours for crews to secure the break of the 8-inch line. It was not immediately clear when the evacuation order would be lifted.
As the repairs continue, makai-bound lanes of Waiakamilo remain shut down.
