GREEN BAY, Wis.— Zane Schreiner’s hands are almost a blur as he and another student assemble a gas meter.
The pair are students in Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Gas Utility program. Both were part of a unique event Friday — a gas rodeo.
The intra-college competition pitted students against the clock and each other in a series of skill-based challenges.
“We take events we’d do in a normally working for a gas utility and them as quick as we can and have a nice little competition,” Schreiner said.
The local event replaced the National Gas Rodeo, an annual competition in Missouri that was canceled this year due to the pandemic.
It’s designed to build teamwork — with some competition tossed in for good measure.
“We are doing things quicker than we’d normally want them to do, but we’re also doing it safely,” said Tom Hebert, the weekend gas program instructor. “There are penalties for the students if they do things unsafe or break a safety rule.”
That ability to work quickly can come in handy with approaching weather or in an emergency situation.
“Say you have rain coming in soon and you have to work a little bit quicker,” student Ivan Troitskiy of Milwaukee said. “It makes you think on your feet more and makes you work on it a lot quicker and figure out if you can do that and handle pressure situations.”
Hebert said the college has graduates of utility programs working jobs coast to coast.
“For the gas utility field, and I’d say for the electric field also, the demand for the students we’re putting out… is very high with a lot of the utilities in Wisconsin, but also all over the United States,” he said. “We’re placing students in the East Coast, the Midwest, West Coast, Southern United States. They’re really going everywhere.”
