Fire heavily damaged a Valero gas station on Sierra Avenue in Fontana on Friday morning, Oct. 30.

“No fuel from the gas pumps was spilled or caught fire,” said Mike McClintock, a battalion chief with the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Officials had not yet determined the fire’s cause.

Firefighters headed to the Valero gas station at 3740 Sierra after receiving a call around 7:39 a.m. Heavy smoke was coming from a residence atop the station.

Firefighters went inside but didn’t find anyone. The flames increased. Firefighters moved outside and went from an offensive to a defensive operation, fire Capt. Jeremy Kern said.

The fire affected the minimart portion of the station. Fire went through the roof, and a couple of walls collapsed, Kern said.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze in about 90 minutes, McClintock said.
