CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The American Public Gas Association (APGA) presented Clearwater Gas System with the prestigious APGA System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) for excellence in operating its natural gas utility. Public natural gas systems are entrusted by their customers to deliver clean and affordable natural gas through a safe and reliable distribution pipeline system. To accomplish this mission, a forward thinking natural gas utility constantly strives to improve its operating capabilities, overcome challenges and adapt to an ever-changing environment.
Of the 750 APGA member systems, Clearwater Gas System was selected for the SOAR bronze level by its APGA Operations and Safety Committee peers. The selection criteria were based on demonstrated excellence in the four areas of system integrity, system improvement, employee safety and workforce development.
System integrity refers to the natural gas distribution system’s safe and efficient protocols for distributing energy to all gas customers. System improvement refers to keeping the natural gas system current through research and development, technology integration and a commitment to continuous system improvement programs. Systems that exhibit excellence in employee safety include ongoing safety programs involving employee education, accountability and safety performance. Lastly, workforce development focuses on creative recruitment, training, education and professional development to improve employee loyalty, motivation, safety and productivity.
APGA president and CEO Dave Schryver said, “Clearwater Gas System was highly rated in all four areas that are required of SOAR. Clearwater Gas System consistently demonstrates a commitment to providing natural gas safely and efficiently to all those in their community and as such, serves as a model for all other natural gas utilities in the country. APGA is proud to recognize Clearwater Gas System and is confident in its continued success.”
Clearwater Gas System was one of 15 SOAR recipients recognized nationally in 2021. A plaque signifying Clearwater Gas System’s commitment to excellence in operating a natural gas utility system will be presented to Clearwater Gas System’s management team.
Clearwater Gas System is the fourth largest municipal gas system in Florida and ranks 34th out of nearly 1,000 public gas systems in the United States. Clearwater Gas System’s service territory includes 20 municipalities and unincorporated areas within northern and central Pinellas County and western and central Pasco County.
