Crews Battle Gas Leak in Marshfield, Mass.

The leak occurred in the area of 344 Plain St. in Marshfield

A gas leak forced the evacuation of about a dozen homes in Marshfield, Massachusetts on Saturday.

No injuries were reported and the Red Cross was on the scene near 344 Plain St. in Marshfield, according to the town's fire marshal.

The gas line was isolated and shutdown and the fire was out as of 7:02 p.m., according to the Marshfield Police Department.

Several homes nearby reported a gas odor and were evacuated Saturday morning, according to Fire Chief Jeff Simpson. The incident left 36 homes without gas and a few without power, according to police.

Crews from Eversource were on the scene as of 2 p.m. working to isolate and shut down the gas leak, said Simpson. Crews were digging two trenches on both sides of the leak to “clamp off” the gas supply and allow the fire to burn out.

Traffic in the areas of Plain, Main and Furnace streets near Route 139 were shut down for several hours as workers attempted to shut off the gas. Residents were urged to avoid the area.
