The Clock Tower in Wasilla reopened Saturday after a presumed sewer gas leak caused seven people in the building to seek treatment at a hospital the previous evening.

“We’re pretty certain that it was related to sewer gas. … Sewer gas may include hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and methane,” said Ken Barkley, director of emergency services for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Barkley said the department first received a call at 6 p.m. Friday from someone feeling ill inside the building. The building was evacuated afterward, and Barkley said that by the time emergency services arrived, “everyone was already out.”

Barkley said multiple individuals were taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, including customers and employees in the building.

Mat-Su Regional spokesman Alan Craft said in an email Saturday afternoon that four people were transported in ambulances “beginning approximately at 7 p.m.” and three people arrived later in private cars.

“The individuals were presenting with respiratory symptoms and irritated eyes,” Craft said. “Six of the patients have been treated and discharged. One has been admitted for observation.”

The Central Mat-Su Fire Department, as well as the Mat-Su Borough hazmat team and emergency services, were on the scene, Barkley said. He also noted that the Anchorage hazmat team came out to assist.

Barkley said the leak was resolved as of 8 a.m. Saturday and that the Clock Tower had reopened.

“We worked with the owner and the manager of the building, making sure that all the precautions were taken,” Barkley said. “They asked us to come out (Saturday) morning just to verify before they opened up their building, and we verified there were zero readings.”

[Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect new information from a hospital spokesman, who said that seven people sought treatment at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in the incident, up from six as originally reported by a borough official.]
