Renewable natural gas (RNG) is set to take hold in Arizona and the high desert region of Southern California based on projects launched by Las Vegas-based Southwest Gas Corp.
The five projects would collectively supply 10 million therms of RNG from wastewater treatment and dairy sites. The first project is the Tres Rios Wastewater Project in Tucson, which is set to begin commercial operations in July.
The utility has been working with legislators and regulators “to pave the way,” and the projects “are just the beginning,” according to CEO John Hester.
Three projects in Arizona are at dairies. Paloma in Gila Bend would begin in October, with the Butterfield in Backeye in December and Milky Way in Maricopa targeted for startup in December 2022. The SoCal Biomethane project should start in August at the Victor Valley Wastewater facility in Victorville, CA.
The gas-only utility also is looking into adopting other low- or zero-carbon emission alternatives, such as hydrogen.
Southwest Gas has regulatory approvals in each state to pursue increased RNG supplies, with a number of prospects in Nevada.

“We are actively engaged in developing new projects in Nevada as well as in the early phases of development on others,” said Southwest Gas spokesperson Sean Corbett. He said the utility is pursuing all-things RNG — from building, owning and operating facilities, to constructing interconnects or purchasing it.
In other news, National Ready Mixed Concrete Co. said it has added 24 near-zero emission compressed natural gas (CNG) concrete mixer trucks from Peterbilt. This expands its fleet in Southern California to 117. Its trucks have logged more than five million miles fueled by RNG-based CNG.
“Near-zero emission natural gas trucks are a readily available technology that can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 90%,” according to California regulator Wayne Nastri, executive officer of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. “National’s ability to increase its natural gas fleets is providing immediate air quality benefits to nearby communities.”
