PARMA, Ohio -- Columbia Gas announced an August start date for a 5,000-foot natural gas line replacement project affecting 90 Sprague Road residents.
The work replacing aging gas lines with new state-of-the-art plastic pipe will take place in both Parma (north side of the road) and North Royalton (south side of the road) between State Road and Hoertz Road/Perl Court.
“Our old gas lines have served us well but just like roads, bridges and other infrastructure things deteriorate over time and the cost to maintain and repair is actually more than putting in the new and more modern pipe,” Columbia Gas of Ohio Public Affairs Specialist Ben Cutler said.
“Once the new pipe is installed, we’ll have a stronger and more reliable system that will last longer than the old system and require less maintenance moving forward. The new plastic pipe has enhanced safety features, along with the ability to expand and contract with shifting temperatures and bend to the contour of the earth.”
Pre-construction work is currently underway with contractor Miller Pipeline expected to finish in roughly three months.
In addition to the new main line, service lines for individual properties will be replaced along with inside gas meters relocated outside.
Cutler said after the installation of a new mainline, which runs in the right-of-way on the north side of Sprague Road, crews will shift to installing new service lines for each property on the project route.
“This generally takes two to four hours per property with service disruption occurring for just a portion of that time,” Cutler said. “Crews will reach out to schedule the service disruption and relight appointment with each property owner.
“There’s no additional cost to customers and Columbia Gas will restore all impacted property.”
As the project nears completion, permanent restoration crews will move in to return the area to its pre-project condition involving concrete and asphalt pouring on hard surfaces and leveling, laying down topsoil and replacing disturbed plants or flower beds on soft surfaces.
“We understand these types of projects can cause angst for customers when it comes to their properties,” Cutler said. “We kindly ask that folks be patient with us and know that crews will fully restore all impacted property to its original condition upon completion of the project.”
