Officials say Joy Drive breach should be repaired by evening

COLONIE — Officials are urging residents on Joy Drive to stay inside or self-evacuate due to a gas line rupture.

A contractor working for National Grid was digging a hole to put up a new pole around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday when he accidentally struck a large, high-pressure natural gas line, said Michael Romero, deputy fire coordinator. National Grid estimates it will be repaired by 6 or 7 p.m.

The threat level remains low, Romero said, but officials are still urging residents to stay inside in order to avoid exposure to the gas.  Romero added that residents should call 911 if they smell gas in their homes.

Numerous roads between Albany Shaker and Old Niskayuna roads are shut down during the repair process, including Joy Drive, Cliff Top Drive, Kim Drive, Cypress Drive Acorn Drive and parts of Marie Parkway.
