GLASFORD (Heart of Illinois ABC) - As the weather becomes colder, people begin to turn their heat up and Ameren Illinois is working to keep those costs down.
At their natural gas storage facility in Glasford, Ameren stores enough gas to fill Busch Stadium 175 times.
Director of Gas Storage for Ameren, Stephen Underwood, said the company buys the gas in the summer when prices are lower. They then store them at the facility until its used in the winter.
Underwood said if they were to buy the gas now, it would cost about 60% more.
“Well, everybody doesn’t want to spend any more money than they have to on the services we provide, so we’re very cognizant of that. This is one of our efforts to try and keep our costs down for our customers,” said Underwood.
Ameren said this also helps with reliability of natural gas incase other pipelines were to go down.
