Shares of energy companies rose sharply as commodity prices broke recent losing streaks.
Oil futures recouped some of their recent losses, rising for the first time in seven sessions, as fears about Federal Reserve policy faded.
"Recession risks won't feel real until closer to the summer, so the oil market should be relatively tight until then," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at foreign-exchange brokerage Oanda Group, in a note to clients.
Natural gas futures rallied, bringing two-session gains to almost 12% despite a report of a smaller-than-anticipated drawdown on stockpiles.
