MIDDLETOWN — A Washington Street man held police at bay for more than an hour Saturday night after he poured gasoline on his wife and started a fire that destroyed two trailers and several vehicles, officials said.
Police and firefighters were alerted to an unfolding crisis at 500 Washington St. around 11:30 p.m. when a female called to report her 55-year-old husband, Eugene Boudreau, had poured gasoline on her and their trailer home during a domestic dispute and lit the structure on fire, Police Chief Erik Costa said.
Smoke was coming from the trailer when police and firefighters arrived, Costa said. The woman was safely removed from the area and evaluated by medics, but refused treatment, Costa said.
Police evacuated the trailer park as the fire raged and the man who started it engaged authorities in an hourlong standoff, Costa said. During the standoff, the blaze spread to two trailers and several vehicles, officials said.
"We were concerned about the rest of the park going up in flames," Costa said.
The man remained outside his trailer as officers and department negotiators tried to talk him into peacefully surrendering, Costa said. Police also used a drone to monitor the situation, Costa said.
At about 12:45 a.m., the man was finally taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment of burns, heat inhalation and hypothermia, Costa said.
Costa said the man was first transported to Middlesex Hospital before being airlifted to Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.
"We have great negotiators and officers who were talking to him," Costa said. "They did a great job."
After the man surrendered, firefighters were able to move in and put out the massive blaze, which by that point had burned two trailers to the ground, damaged a third and damaged several vehicles, Middletown Fire Chief Jay Woron said.
At least four people were displaced by the blaze, which took about 20 minutes to get under control, Woron said. "The overhaul was pretty extensive so we didn't leave the scene until about 4:15 a.m.," Woron said.
Most of the residents were allowed back into their trailers, he said. Those who were displaced were helped by the American Red Cross, Woron said.
Investigators will be speaking with the Middletown State's Attorney to determine what charges the man could face, Costa said.
