SAN LEANDRO — Some residents were evacuated and others told to remain inside early Sunday after an SUV crashed into a house and severed the home’s gas line, authorities said.
The driver of the vehicle suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
The crash happened about 4:50 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Bancroft Avenue at Broadmoor Boulevard.
An SUV crashed through a chain-link fence and hit the side of a house, severing the gas line and leaving a gaping hole in the structure, authorities said.
The residents of the house that was hit got outside on their own and at least two adjacent homes were evacuated, police said. A shelter-in-place order was put in effect for other residents in the area.
Alameda County Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Sheehan said firefighters were able to stop the gas leak before PG&E workers got to the scene to fully secure the line. Those evacuated were able to return to their homes by 6:45 a.m., and the shelter-in-place order was lifted. The residents of the house the vehicle hit will be displaced until their gas service can be restored, authorities said.
San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou said the cause of the crash is under investigation. Anyone with information may call police at 510-577-2740.
