Recently Winona LaDuke wrote an article in “The Circle,” titled “Desperate pipeline companies try to push ahead during pandemic,” where she claims that the oil industry is dying, and that Line 3 is not necessary. What she completely misses is that oil is still the most reliable and available energy source our world has.
Wind power and solar power today are not realistic solutions and will not be anytime soon. Unfortunately, it takes hundreds of square miles of solar panels or wind turbines to actually power anything. Not to mention that they only work when the sun is out or wind is blowing. On top of this, the infrastructure for these types of energy sources is not reliable, breaking down after a decade or so and having to be replaced.
Even if right now we have excess oil that is only because people are locked down. Things are starting to move again and as more people travel, the need for energy will once again skyrocket. We would be foolish to think we could rely on solar and wind to supply the energy we will need to meet the demand. Line 3 still needs permits, and this is the perfect time to approve those, get construction started, and bring much needed stimulus to northern Minnesota.
