GOSHEN, Ind. (WNDU) - U.S. 33 is now reopen between Harrison St. and Chicago Ave. after a major gas leak in Goshen.

City officials said the leak has been repaired, and residents are now safe to return home.

The gas leak was near the intersection of High St. and US 33.

About 14 businesses and roughly 1,000 people had to be evacuated south to Lincoln Ave., north to Chicago Ave. and west of Riverside Blvd.

The call came in around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire chief said equipment failed and there was a problem with an apparatus on the pipe.

Crews said a substantial amount of gas came out of the pipe.

NIPSCO, Goshen Police and Fire, the mayor and others assisted.

“It’s an 8 inch gas line with another 2 inch line running off of it. It’s a high pressure line so it’s natural gas. I believe NIPSCO said it was around 200 psi is the pressure. So we are taking every precaution that we can," said Fire Chief with the Goshen Police Department Dan Sink.

“I heard the sirens earlier and next thing I know, we have someone coming in saying we have to be evacuated," said resident Jeff Bevers.
