A natural gas line damaged at a construction site vented into the air and forced evacuation of 112 homes and road closures for several hours on Monday, June 22, in a southwest Riverside County area between Murrieta and Winchester, authorities said.
The venting gas, first reported at 9:26 a.m., was stopped in the early afternoon, Cal Fire/Riverside County said. Evacuations were lifted and roads were reopened, a Southern California Gas Company spokeswoman said.
The line break was at 35288 Waimea Way, and the damage was believed to have been caused by a third-party contractor working in the area, spokeswoman Marissa Girolamo said.
She said there was one natural gas outage in the area from the damage, and that SoCal Gas crews were working to make permanent repairs.
The gas had been going into the open air, Cal Fire spokeswoman April Newman said. Winchester Road between Whisper Heights Parkway and Algarve Avenue-Blue Spruce Lane had been closed shortly after 11 a.m., then reopened in the early afternoon.
Riverside County sheriff’s deputies had been called to help with the evacuations. The area is mostly a residential neighborhood.
Girolamo reminded that contractors, business owners and homeowners should call 811 before digging at construction sites or yards to make certain of natural gas line locations.
