The second phase of Alabama’s 10-cent gas tax increase will go into effect Oct. 1. The increase – 2 cents per gallon on gas and diesel fuels – will bring the state’s total gas tax to 26 cents per gallon.
The first phase of the gas tax increase, 6 cents, started Sept. 1, 2019. Another 2 cents will be levied on Oct. 1, 2021 and then, effective Oct. 1, 2023, and on July 1 of every year after that, the gasoline and diesel excise tax rate will be adjusted by the percentage change in the yearly average of the National Highway Construction Cost Index, rounded to the nearest whole cent.
The increase or the decrease of the excise tax will not exceed 1 cent per gallon, according to the legislation passed last year. Proceeds from the tax goes towards road and bridge projects across the state.
The 2019 increase marked the first change in Alabama’s gas tax since 1992.
