The plan was to give away $20 in free gas to the first 150 cars, according to Jonas Jones, pastor.

And plenty of people wanted to be one of the 150.

Chandra McFaline, cashier (pictured in checkered mask), said people were coming into the gas station at 6 a.m. when she opened, asking, "Where should be line up?"

"I tried to line them up as best as I could," McFaline said as she pumped gas into one of the vehicles. "People were lined up down the street."

Outside, volunteers kept the process of driving up the pumps smooth and orderly.

Inside, Danny Patel was busy ringing up the sales at the cash register.

"That $20 might mean the difference for someone getting back and forth to work," Venice said. "It's really a blessing, especially during these difficult times."

When Patel was asked if it was a good day, he smiled and nodded, saying, "Yes, yes, yes."

Venice Jones, Jonas' wife, said she noticed the lines forming at 7 a,m. when she arrived at the church, which is located at 2423 Glenwood Ave. - just down the street from Marathon Gas.

She the church was actually giving away gas to 162 people today since they had extra donations for the events.

Venice said the entire event benefitted everyone involved: the people who received the gas and Patel, who received more than $3,000 in additional sales in a short time.

Carlotta Shoemaker of Joliet heard about the event from her sister and didn't mind patiently waiting in line for her turn.

"It's something that's helping me out a lot, especially since I have kids to take care of," Shoemaker said.

In Thursday's Herald-News, Jonas said the gas giveways are a popular outreach event. The gas is usually gone in 90 minutes, he said.

The last three gas giveaways were held at a former CITGO station on Joliet's east side

Jones said the gas giveaway was part of the church’s outreach vision for 2020 and he’s thankful the church was still a position to do it.

On Aug. 1 the same church also gave away $1,200 of laundry services between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at The Blue Kangaroo Laundromat on Cass Street in Joliet.

Initially the gas giveaway was going to be paired with a back-to-school coat drive.

"But because of covid happening, we decided not to do the [coat] drive," Jonas said in Thursday's story. "So we bumped up the giveaway."
