A young couple, soon to be married, was discovered dead in the bathroom of their residence in the Chikkajala area of Bengaluru on June 10. The police suspect the couple died after inhaling carbon monoxide from the gas geyser that they had installed.
The victims have been identified as Chandrashekhar M, 30, and Sudharani Binni, 22. Both were employed at a luxury resort near Nandi Hills. Chandrashekhar had rented a house owned by a police officer in Tarabanahalli, approximately 10 km from the Kempegowda International Airport.
The incident came to light on Sunday evening when the house owner knocked on their door, and when they did not respond, he informed the police on their emergency helpline number. The police broke open the door and found the couple dead.
Chandrashekhar and Sudharani were in a relationship and were planning to get married, with the support of their respective families. On June 10, at around 6 pm, the couple arrived at the house to spend time together. A few hours later, they decided to take a shower and turned on the bathroom geyser, a 7.5-litre gas geyser connected to an LPG cylinder.
The exact sequence of events remains unclear, but evidence suggests that the geyser malfunctioned, leading to the release of carbon monoxide. The closed bathroom door and window proved fatal as the couple unknowingly inhaled the toxic fumes. They lost consciousness and ultimately succumbed to the fumes, said a police officer.
Chandrashekar was from the Gundlupet taluk in the state’s Chamarajanagar district and Sudharani belonged to the Gokak taluk in the Belagavi district.
In gas geysers, partial combustion takes place which then emits carbon monoxide which is odourless and colourless. In case of a leak, users may not notice it. If the bathroom where it is fitted does not have sufficient outlets or ventilators, it is dangerous, a police officer explained.
