City spends $309K on four gas-guzzling SUVs to ferry Mayor Adams, other top officials - New York Post

The city may be on the highway to hell — but at least the mayor’s headed there in style.

The city paid big bucks for five posh, gas-guzzling new SUVs to take Mayor Eric Adams and other top officials around town — even though the bike-boosting pol once vowed to pedal to work “all the time.”

City Hall added a gleaming black Lincoln Navigator with tricked-out rims, two Chevrolet Suburban High Country with 420 horsepower and two luxury Ford Expeditions to its fleet of department cars, for a combined total of roughly $386,000, The Post has learned.

“I thought we were in a fiscal crisis, or at least we were when we were having to negotiate the budget,” one city councilman snarked.

“You’d think a mayor trying to cut senior meals would be more frugal with his own fleet,” another blasted — referencing a proposed $12 million cut to the New York City Department for the Aging, which funds meal deliveries to the elderly.

Adams gets carted around daily in the Suburban’s High Country range, which has abysmal gas mileage of just 14 mpg in the city.

The pollution-spewing Navigator — which is the biggest and most luxurious model made by Ford — tallies 16 mpg.

The Expeditions, one of which boasts tinted windows and twin tailpipes, get 17 mpg in the city.

Adams’ road-hogging new whips fly in the face of a campaign promise he made to frequently bicycle to work to help improve street safety.

“If elected, you’re going to see me on my bike all the time riding to and from City Hall in a real way,” Adams told reporters in October 2021 — after earning an endorsement from the safe streets group StreetsPAC.

“I think if people start seeing their mayor on a bike, they’d be more encouraged to know that the streets are safe to ride their bikes,” he added.

Reporters, however, haven’t seen Adams on a two-wheeler near City Hall at all in recent months.

A 2023 Lincoln Navigator has a starting price of $79,725 before taxes and fees while the Chevrolet Suburban High Country costs at least $77,400.

The two Ford Expeditions cost $75,700 a pop, according to city records.

But massive monochromatic rims on the city’s Lincoln Navigator are typically reserved for an optional upscale package — bringing the suggested manufacturer’s price tag to as high as $95,325 before taxes and dealer fees.

By contrast, former Mayor Bill de Blasio was escorted around in a $45,000 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid van, which gets 30 miles per gallon, during the last two years of his administration.

De Blasio came under fire for trips to the YMCA gym in Park Slope, which required a motorcade of gas-guzzling SUVs to shuttle him between boroughs.

City Hall didn’t immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.

The NYPD, which also uses the cars, along with the Department of Citywide Administrative Services also didn’t return requests for comment.
