TINLEY PARK, Ill. — A strong odor across Chicago’s south and southwest suburbs is prompting a response from local officials.

According to the Village of Tinley Park, there have been several 911 calls Wednesday morning regarding an “odor of natural gas outside.”

“The 911 center is receiving calls for odor of natural gas outside. Many of the suburbs to the east of Tinley Park are getting reports as well. The BP Refinery in Whiting is actively looking into this,” the village’s Facebook post reads.

The city of Oak Forest is also acknowledging a natural gas order in the town. The city says Nicor Gas is working to locate the problem.

The police department in Glenwood also released an alert saying,”We are aware of the natural gas like odor and believe we have found the source. The dense fog and atmospheric conditions are holding the natural gas like odor in the area. Thanks for your patience while we continue to work with our partners on mitigation.”

The cause of the smell is being investigated. No other information has been provided at this time.

Nicor released the following statement Wednesday:

The safety of our customers and communities is our No. 1 value. Nicor Gas has received and responded to a high volume of calls reporting a natural gas odor. Our first responders investigate every natural gas odor report from customers as a safety precaution and will continue to do so as we work to identify the cause.

The reported odor started in the south suburbs early this morning and the wind is carrying the smell west across our service territory. At this time, Nicor Gas is not experiencing any service outages in connection with this incident.

Natural gas is naturally odorless. As a safety measure for detection, mercaptan is added, which gives natural gas an odor often associated with rotten eggs. Mercaptan will naturally dissipate and poses no harm to the community. If residents suspect a natural gas leak, they are strongly encouraged to call 888.Nicor.4U. For more information on how to detect natural gas leaks please visit nicorgas.com/safety
