A Smith's Marketplace in Sandy was evacuated Sunday morning when a group of firefighters who happened to be on a grocery run detected a carbon monoxide gas leak.

Officials of the Sandy City Fire Department said that the crew was shopping at the Smith's located at 10305 South 1300 East around 9:20 a.m. when they noticed an unusual scent of combustion within the building.

An employee of the Smith's also picked up on the scent and reported it the the group, who then immediately began taking carbon monoxide readings.

Authorities said that high levels of the toxic gas were detected, setting off alarms and prompting the evacuation of 30 shoppers.

It was reported that there were no complaints of sickness or injury.

Dominion Energy crews responded and shut down the store's furnaces and cleared the fumes from exhaust vents.

This incident comes just a week after 54 people suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Monroe.

"CO is odorless and can be extremely dangerous when exposure levels are high and lengthy," officials stated. "Fortunately, Sandy City Firefighters were in the right place at the right time and took quick action to avoid a more serious situation."
