TITTABAWASSEE TWP, MI - A gas main hit during work Tuesday morning has led to a note of caution from the Tittabawassee Township Fire Department.
The fire department issued a statement advising a contractor working at the corner of Freeland and River roads hit a 2-inch gas main.
“That area will be shut down until further notice,” per the statement. “Please avoid this area.”
The statement noted a west wind is “blowing the smell of natural gas into town.”
Fire officials and Consumers Energy are monitoring the situation.
Consumers Energy spokesman Terri DeDoes said the incident took place when an excavator working on a roundabout project hit the two-inch medium pressure main.
A Consumers crew at the scene has identified where they will need to excavate down to “squeeze it off to stop the gas from escaping,” said DeDoes, with the work estimated to be complete around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
One customer will be impacted by a loss of service as the repairs take place, DeDoes said.
