Streets near the 1300 block of Pembroke Road in Bethlehem were shut after a natural gas incident just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, authorities say.
A company that set up a tent last week at 1129 Garfield St. was taking it down Tuesday and the workers pulled out a spike that likely had entered the main last week but plugged any release of gas at the time, city fire Chief Warren Achey said. Two workers who subsequently inhaled gas were taken to a hospital for treatment , Achey said.
Nine buildings were evacuated and about 150 people were sheltered in a Bethlehem Housing Authority building until it was safe to go home, Achey said. Roads were closed initially at a wide radius by city police officers and firefighters as a precaution, Achey said. The closure was later narrowed to Garfield Street.
UGI arrived at 9:20 a.m. to the scene a short distance from Pembroke Road, utility spokesman Joe Swope said.
UGI shut off two values to make the housing authority’s residences safe, Swope said in an email. All gas readings were outside, he said. Approximately 56 UGI customers lost service, he added.
Just before 11 a.m., UGI crews were still making repairs, Swope said. Service should be restored during the afternoon, he said.
All city police and firefighters had left by late morning, Achey said.
