Norwich — City fire staff said they quickly secured a “dangerous” gas leak Saturday morning after construction crews working in a basement on Williams Street punctured a natural gas line feeding the property.
Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin said in a news release Saturday fire crews responded to 94 Williams St. about 11:05 a.m. for the report of a gas leak and were on scene by 11:08 a.m.
Because there were "dangerous levels of natural gas," fire crews immediately evacuated the area and established a water supply before Norwich Public Utilities arrived on scene, securing the gas line within 10 minutes, Benjamin said.
All affected homes in the area have since been ventilated and the scene was “placed under control” about 11:45 a.m. While all residents have since returned to their homes, NPU remained on scene to replace the gas line, Benjamin said.
