OAKLAND — Residents were evacuated from an East Oakland neighborhood Monday morning after an EBMUD construction crew broke an underground PG&E gas line, authorities said.
No injuries were reported.
The mishap was reported at about 9:50 a.m. Monday in the area of 39th Avenue and Bayo Street where EBMUD is in the process of replacing an older cast iron pipe with a 12-inch steel pipe, officials said.
Authorities said a 4-inch plastic gas line was punctured by a backhoe the construction crew was using, causing a leak and forcing the evacuation of more than a half-dozen residential structures in the area, authorities said.
PG&E crews responded to the scene and had the flow of gas stopped at 11:55 a.m., officials said. All repairs were expected to be completed by Monday afternoon. Oakland firefighters also responded to the scene as a precaution.
Streets in the area were shut down as well while the leak was worked on.
