Some cities are passing bans on natural gas appliances to help curb emissions, climate change - TribLIVE

Cookin’ with gas? Maybe not for long.

According to CBS News, “major cities across the U.S. are passing bans on gas stoves and other appliances that run on natural gas because of their planet-warming emissions.”

About 80 local governments — mostly in California — have passed laws requiring or encouraging new homes and businesses to use electric rather than natural gas appliances, according to CBS’s report.

All in an effort to curb emissions and stem global warming.

This has been a yearslong movement.

Berkeley, Calif., enacted a ban in 2019 of natural gas hookups in new construction, according to CNN. “Other progressive cities followed suit with similar bans,” according to CNN, including San Francisco in 2020 and New York City last year.

Some conservative states have responded by passing laws prohibiting such bans, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 13% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 came from commercial and residential sources. Of that, most — 80% — came from the combustion of natural gas.

A study from Stanford University, published earlier this year in Environmental Science & Technology, found that gas stoves release methane and other pollutants through leaks and incomplete combustion equivalent annually to the emissions of about 500,000 gasoline-powered automobiles.

An EPA spokesman told the Washington Post that the agency has not included emissions from inside homes and buildings in its Greenhouse Gas Inventory, an annual report on U.S. economic sectors, but planned to update its approach.

The American Gas Association issued a statement in August opposing a possible federal ban on gas appliances.

“Any proposal that bans natural gas or natural gas appliances would be harmful to consumers and to the environment,” the AGA’s statement read. “America’s natural gas utilities invest millions of dollars every day to advance low- and zero-carbon energy technologies and reduce emissions, efforts that have led to a 69 percent decline in emissions since 1990.

“Natural gas is helping our nation achieve our environmental goals in real-time, and the data proves that out. Conversely, (a ban) would impose undue burdens on consumers at every step of the process.”
