Natural gas line break causes mayor to declare emergency in Pullman, surrounding areas - Idaho News

Pullman, Washington's Mayor Glenn Johnson has issued an emergency declaration Wednesday due to a regional natural gas outage affecting Pullman and surrounding communities.

City buildings are heated with natural gas, which means all non-essential operations are suspended and the buildings are closed to the public until further notice, including city, according to the emergency declaration.

Emergency manager Mike Heston has activated the City Emergency Management Plan and assumed the role of incident commander. "The organization will continue working with Avista to define a timeline to return to normal operations. This is a complicated repair and restart. Gas is not like electricity where you can flip a switch and everyone is instantly back on," says Heston.

The state of emergency allows for additional resources to become available to the community as the situation needs evolve.

City transportation and essential services will continue to operate. Washington State University has opened the CUB building to the general public during the emergency. Additional crews are being brought in to assist the area in restoring services. Additional information and contact info can be found at myavista.com
