SPRINGFIELD — Gas now averages $3.31 in greater Springfield as the price of crude oil rises, AAA said Monday.
That price is up from $3.19 last month. A gallon of gas in greater Springfield averaged $3.92 at this time last year as motorists felt the price shocks from the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline rose 7 cents since last week to $3.67. AAA blamed the rise on the high cost of oil, gasoline’s main ingredient, which is hovering at a little more than $80 a barrel. The national average of gas has risen daily since March 29.
Earlier this month, oil producers, including members of the OPEC cartel, announced plans to cut production by more than 1 million barrels.
“When the cost of crude oil crosses the $80 a barrel mark, that puts a lot of upward pressure on what we pay at the pump,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast vice president of public and government affairs, “and as long as oil costs remain at the current level, drivers will likely see incremental price increases for now.”
The average price per gallon in Massachusetts is up 5 cents from last week and is now averaging $3.40 per gallon, AAA said. Today’s price is 67 cents lower than April 17, 2022 when it was $4.07.
Massachusetts’ average gas price is 27 cents lower than the national average.
Hampden County has the lowest average gas price in the state at $3.30.
Hampshire County averages $3.36. Franklin averages $3.39 a gallon.
Harford County, Connecticut averages $3.48 a gallon. Connecticut is phasing in its 25-cent-a-gallon gas tax with the final 5-cent jump expected May 1.
