GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) Police have made an arrest in a murder investigation involving a woman who was shot more than 10 times while working at a Glendale gas station last week. The suspect has been identified as 20-year-old Mohammad Hussain Ataei.

Around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, April 21, police responded to reports of a shooting at a business near 51st and Glendale avenues. Inside the store, they found a store employee, 25-year-old Irma Rivera-Martinez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

During a news conference on Friday afternoon, police detailed what led up to Ataei’s arrest. Police say video surveillance showed the suspect park his dark blue Toyota Camry in a nearby alley. A camera outside the store then shows the suspect, dressed all in black, walk into the store. He’s seen running from the store less than a minute later. Police say the man had gone in, walked to the back of the store where Rivera-Martinez was stocking shelves, and shot her over 10 times at close range.

Glendale police say they arrested a man who murdered a woman by shooting her 10 times and it was surveillance video that help officers track him down.

Police were able to identify Ataei based on the license plate info captured by another nearby camera. Officers set up surveillance and arrested him Thursday night near 48th and Glendale avenues. During a search warrant at his home in Avondale, police say they found clothing matching what the suspect was wearing, including tennis shoes with flame graphics. Officers also found the gun they say was used in the murder.

Police say Ataie has refused to cooperate with detectives and has since been booked into jail on a charge of first-degree premeditated murder. Glendale police believe Rivera-Martinez was targeted, but have not indicated how, or if, she knew Ataei.

“We do believe it’s targeted, we don’t believe any of the community are at risk at this point,” said Officer Gina Winn, a Public Information Officer for Glendale Police. “We believe it’s targeted for a number of reasons so when Ataei parked his vehicle down the street he circled his vehicle to figure out what was going on. He walked to the Chevron specifically, located Irma, looked at her, shot her, and left. There was not an attempt to rob the store,” said Winn.

The Rivera-Martinez family is mourning. Her father sent this statement to Arizona’s Family, “She was the best of loving daughters, always a nice person and people loved her a lot. Now all our family and friends have great pain in our souls,” said David Rivera, Irma’s father.

“It’s still unreal that all this is happening and it’s like, she isn’t going to be here with us anymore, and we can’t do anything of these things with her in the future now,” said Irma’s good friend George Tienda. “My first reaction, I texted Irma twice and I told her, ‘Hey can you text me back as soon as possible?” Tienda recalled when he heard an employee had been shot.

Tienda said their friends don’t know anything about the suspect. “She never had mentioned anything about this guy,” said Tienda. “I have no idea who this guy is.”

Glendale police say Mohammad Hussain Ataei, 20, shot Irma Rivera-Martinez, 25, at least 10 times while she was at work in a gas station.

“She was the type of friend you needed. She was the type of friend that was always there,” said Tienda. The Rivera-Martinez family created a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral costs. If you would like to donate, click here.
